lifelong learning - a matter for the highly educated or a necessity for everyone?

Cecilia Bjursell, PhD, is Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Mälardalen University, and Professor of Education at the School of Education and Communication, Jönköping University. In her research, Bjursell works with concepts such as lifelong learning, older adults learning, education management, narratives and learning in working life. Bjursell has extensive experience in leading research environments and collaborating with actors in society, mainly as member of boards, councils and networks.

Lifelong learning involves the interaction between who we are and who we become. Education is not just about acquiring new skills or knowledge but also a process that shapes how we see ourselves and our place in the world. However, access to and participation in education varies for different groups in society. It is known that individuals with higher levels of education tend to participate and engage in lifelong learning throughout their lives, while it may actually be those lacking formal education or resources who may have the greatest need for and benefit from lifelong learning to improve their living conditions and opportunities. By investing in education for all and promoting a culture of learning, society can contribute to ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
