Joanne Leng is a recent graduate of Auckland University of Technology where she pursued a Bachelor of Business with a major in International Business & Management. She did her co-op with Effective Research in London. Joanna had this to say about her experience “The placement with London-based Effective Research, as an Online Project Management/Client Development intern for three months, pushed me outside my comfort zone. Working in a multinational team of Colombian, Italian, Spanish and English members, Joanna was also dealing with clients from all over the world. Cross-cultural skills are crucial in our globalised business world and this easily transferable skill will benefit me in my future career.”

Mr. Aurimas Jankaskas a third year student at the University of Limerick, Ireland, is majoring in a Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering and plans to pursue a career in the aircraft design field and pursue his interest for R&D in the areas of materials. He did an eight month co-op/internship with DLR, the German Aerospace Centre in Hamburg, Germany. While there he worked on many interesting and innovative projects as part of his co-op experience. He felt the overall experience was very beneficial and will greatly support him as he moves forward with his career.

“My Coop placement at DLR, Air Transportation Systems Institute, was very beneficial and I have learned a lot working with such a prestigious institution. Not only I got used to the day to day professional environment, but I also improved my current skills and learned new ones such as time management, report writing, analytical skills, etc. This experience also helped me to broaden my career choices as I have discovered new engineering fields and helped identify research as a potential career area. I feel I now have a professional network which will prove useful in the future.”

Aurimas Jankaskas worked for DLR, the German Aerospace Centre located in Hamburg. It is the national center for aerospace, energy and transportation research in Germany. It is headquartered in Cologne and has other multiple locations across Germany where other University of Limerick’s students are also place. DLR has approximately 7400 employees. They have been an employer with the University of Limerick, Ireland, Co-op/internship program for the past two years and have employed 7 students since the beginning of our partnership.

Mr. Shane Newman a fourth year student at the University of Limerick, Ireland, is majoring in a Bachelor of Business Accounting and Finance and plans to pursue a career in consulting in the financial sector. He did an eight month co-op/internship with Credit Suisse Funds Services in Luxembourg. While there, he worked in the Fund structuring Department dealing with clients and reporting on specific funds as part of his co-op experience. He felt the overall experience was very beneficial and will greatly support him as he moves forward with his career.

“Having partaken in an 8 month international work placement, I have gained strong knowledge of the international banking sector. Thanks to my work experience, I have already secured a three and a half year graduate role in my number one choice firm, KPMG Consulting. Having done three interviews, the most common point of interest for all was the experience I have gained, noting that all interviewers had a particular interest in the international element of my placement. I have undoubtedly built some great professional relationships in Luxembourg as well as outside of work including the opportunity to connect with the Irish Ambassador to Luxembourg. Under his lead, I have organised a networking event attended by all UL students in Luxembourg at the Embassy, to which he expressed an interest in continuing the tradition each year”.

Save the Mothers
  Student Bio:

Christina Marchand is a very recent graduate of the University of Waterloo majoring in Health Studies. In 2013, Christina spent a co-op term in Uganda with Save the Mothers, where she helped to deliver 200 babies and raised awareness about maternal health issues. This life-changing experience led to Christina’s founding FullSoul Canada, a company that sells luxury items to raise money for hospital supplies in Uganda.

Save the Mothers, Christina’s employer while she worked in Uganda, is an international organization that equips professionals – from a wide array of disciplines – in developing countries to improve the health of mothers and babies. Through their specific vocations, graduates of their Master in Public Health Leadership program become influencers for positive societal change, working to overcome preventable maternal death. "My co-operative work placement with EY Luxembourg has been the first stepping stone of my career. I spent eight months working in the Assurance department where I developed many technical accounting skills and acquired a wealth of business knowledge. The most rewarding aspect of my work placement has been learning how to perform and work in an international business setting and work with many different nationalities (EY Luxembourg employs over 40 different nationalities). I now have the skills I need to be successful with my career when I graduate".

He felt the overall experience was very beneficial and will greatly support him as he moves forward with his career. “My time on Co-Op placement enhanced my foundational knowledge I received at university; allowed for access of all areas of an elite sports team, learning from the world leading experts in each domain of sport science; I also gained important contacts and valuable networking opportunities. I was provided with both challenging and exciting work with high levels of responsibility and accountability. As well as that, Co-Op prepares you for necessary real-world everyday skills such as organisation, punctuality, and using common sense. By travelling abroad you also get to exposure of different cultures, meet new people, go outside your comfort zone, and make life-long friends, which may be the most rewarding aspect of the whole experience.”

Katrin majored in International Business in the Bachelor of Business program at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand. She has a New Zealand Grade Point Average of 7.4. In her program at
AUT, Co-operative Education is required for her degree. Katrin completed a nine-week co-operative education placement with Oldenburger Yacht Interiors in Dinklage, Germany. Her assignments included working as a project assistant on a yacht refit in Spain, work in sales, the calculations department and managed the installation team on site. Katrin says of her experience “This provided me with the
opportunity to work in an international, fast paced and creative environment and prepared me
excellently for my future career.”

Harrison is a senior at Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in Biomedical Engineering. He currently carries a 4.0 Grade Point Average. Harrison completed an internship in the summer of 2013 at Space Applications Services in Brussels, Belgium where he worked in the area of robotic exoskeleton design. He currently plans to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in order to accomplish his long-term goals of performing robotic exoskeleton research and development. Harrison states “My international experience expanded my view of the world and other cultures. Additionally, through the work experience, I learned a great deal of scientific and professional knowledge and my career aspirations and goals were reaffirmed.”
