 A Formal Definition
WACE, the sponsor of the 2018-2019 The Best of Co-op: A Guide to the Leading Institutions & Employers, has adopted the following operational definition:
“College cooperative education is formally recognized as an academic program integrating classroom learning and productive work experiences in a field related to a student’s academic and career goals. Co-op provides students with progressive learning experiences integrating theory and practice. As an academic program, co-op serves as a partnership among students, educational institutions and employers.”
This operational definition includes a number of responsibilities and agreements among the educational institution, employer, and the co-op student. These agreements focus on academic credit, learning assessments, on-going advising and work supervision.
